OK, finished reading the book. Quite shocking the way the police are bending the rules to suit their own ends. Particularly the scandelous way they deal with peaceful protestors by locking them up under the prevention of terrorism act.

However, one thing that was pointed out to me in a discussion on another forum. The problem is as many of these laws are relatively new and so police are interpretting them as they see fit.

It's only after the laws have been given chance to settle in, usually after public outcry over the way they are being used and after judges refuse to convict owing to the way the case has been handled, that police then go easy and only use them in exceptional circumstances.

For example, technically its considered treason to make disparaging remarks about the royal family, however I doubt the police would EVER prosecute people for doing so.

So, whats anyones views. Are these shocking tales just a few bumps to be endured until the finer details over how the laws should be applied are ironed out, or are we really on the slippery slope?

Public outcry? These days? Only if the tabloids kick up a fuss!

I'm going with slippery slope.

There are however lots of laws people could be prosecuted under but the police rarely bother with.

It's illegal to sell any films not classified by the BBFC in this country, yet if you look on Ebay, you can pick up all manner of imported DVDs from various UK sellers.

If they enforced that they would have to lock up half of Ebay.
